Not so with the Passive Optical Network.<\/p>\n<p>In an earlier post, I compared the <a title=\"Passive Optical LAN,Your Brazuca!\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abrahamsconsulting.com\/blog\/passive-optical-lan-brazuca\/\">passive optical LAN\u00a0<\/a> to the Brazuca.<\/p>\n<p>Well,<\/p>\n<p>now I am eating crow.<\/p>\n<p>Chewed. Swallowed. Done.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brazil.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Oh&#8230;.. Brazil.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ouch.<\/p>\n<p>So much for your World Cup ambitions.<\/p>\n<p>A math buff, I am not. But, here is an equation for those of you who are.<\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tellabs.com\/blog\/index.cfm\/2014\/7\/15\/The-Simple-Solution-to-Your-Network-Management-Challenges\">Passive Optical Network=simplicity: Active Ethernet LAN=convolution<\/a><\/h4>\n<p>Here is why:<\/p>\n<p>The traditional active Ethernet network LAN has a router in the top most layer that links to the campus or building aggregation switches (distribution layer). The distribution switches connects down to the access layer switches in the communication closets as copper cables which extend from the communication closets to the users.<\/p>\n<h4>Compare the Passive Optical Network<\/h4>\n<p>The router is also in the core layer but the Optical Line Terminal\u00a0 (OLT) eliminates the need to\u00a0 buy all those switches\u00a0 used in the traditional Ethernet LAN.<\/p>\n<p>And here is your Ah! Ah! moment&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ready?<\/p>\n<p>This one device&#8211;the Optical Line Terminal, serves the same purpose as the switches at a fraction of the cost!<\/p>\n<p>And here is another piece of Ah!
